Milwaukee police squad totaled; 2 officers, woman hurt

Two Milwaukee police officers were hurt in a crash involving their squad car near Holton and North Monday afternoon, May 2.

Police said just before 1 p.m., a driver disregarded a red light and struck the squad. That driver, a woman, 33, was also hurt, along with the two officers.

Sara Ninham said she had just let her dogs outside when she looked down the street.

"A car speeding through. It happened real fast," Ninham said. "It was definitely red. Because it was green for the police officers."

Ninham said a black SUV was heading northbound when it hit the squad.

"I run to the corner and I see the squad on its side," Ninham said.

"Big smash outside the window. I came and checked to see if it was someone hitting my car," said Matt Collins, artist with Black Dawn Tattoo.

Collins said he then saw people running towards the intersection.

"There was a group of 15 people, maybe, that pushed it back onto its wheels," Collins said. "Making sure people in the car were OK. Checking the other car as well."

Ninham said she tried to climb up, but could not get the door open.

"I was freaking out trying to help her," Ninham said. "It could have been worse, it could have been worse."

Police say the officers and the woman were all taken to the hospital – and expected to be OK.
