Help MPS 2nd graders who are learning the art of persuasion

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Second graders at Milwaukee Public Schools’ Hartford University School are on a mission -- and need your help.

When they started studying persuasive writing, they had one goal in mind -- to convince the principal to give them ten more minutes of recess.

"it's fun. you can run around, play basketball, football and all sorts of games," said student Jeremiah Beans.

Room 21’s students wrote a letter to Principal Tanzanique Carrington. It reads: "The students in room 21 would like extra recess time. We would like 10 more minutes of recess. If we get 10 more minutes of recess, we would pay more attention in class. We would have more energy to do our work, and we would get a lot of energy out. Those are the reasons we should have extra recess time."

Principal Carrington replied to the letter with her own challenge. It reads: "I believe that goal setting is important. Therefore, if your class meets my goal, I will allow you 10 minutes of extra recess. All you need is 1,000,000 "Likes" on Facebook."
