MILWAUKEE -- Construction began Monday, June 18th on Habitat for Humanity, Milwaukee's 500th home!
The home is being built on North 40th Street. Once construction of the home is complete, it will become the new home for 48-year-old Renee Walls, her son Alonzo and her elderly father, for whom Walls is the primary caretaker.
“Because of this opportunity I will be able to take my father out of hospice and care for him at our home,” Walls said.
Walls works as a security guard at Roosevelt Middle School and currently rents a two-bedroom apartment from the Housing Authority, located in the North Lawn neighborhood.
It took 27 years for the group to achieve this milestone, and they believe it won't take that long to reach another 500.
"May this day be an opportunity for us to redouble our efforts, both from a volunteer standpoint -- our staff, our board of directors, city officials, residents, funders -- that this need continues and that we won't rest until every resident in this city and in this county has decent, affordable place to live," Brian Sonderman with Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity said Monday.
The 500th home is part of a June blitz week, where rough framing will be completed for seven Milwaukee homes, near North 39th and 40th Streets in Milwaukee’s Washington Park neighborhood.
Habitat for Humanity has built or rehabilitated 499 homes on Milwaukee’s north side over the past 27 years.
