MILWAUKEE -- What started as a garage fire quickly spread to two other garages, a nearby home and the siding of an apartment building near 61st and Main St. in Milwaukee Monday, May 28th.
The fire broke out in the garage around 6 a.m. Neighbors tell FOX6 News they heard a series of loud pops and then noticed the fire.
"I thought it was just people throwing rocks at my window to wake me up, but right when I put my head out the window, I felt these flames and I felt the smoke coming. It was a big disaster," one neighbor said.
Scott Falk was returning from a weekend away and was greeted with the sight of crews working around a pile of charred debris.
"The emotional and adrenaline rush that hits you -- it's really hard to explain. It's so overwhelming. You don't know where to go, what to do," Falk said.
Falk noticed his neighbor's garage was gone and their home badly damaged. Despite the flames and intense heat, the fire never reached Falk's house.
"The sense of relief is amazing. It was sad to see all the damage we had, but to see the extent of it wasn't as catastrophic as it could've been was a great relief," Falk said.
Falk did lose his Harley and will have to replace his garage, but he says he's grateful it wasn't worse.
"Just knowing that what was damaged can be fixed and repaired and replaced took a great burden off my shoulders," Falk said.
Once firefighters were on the scene, they used a saw to cut the roof of the garage open in order to vent the fire. They also doused the flames with water.
Remarkably, nobody was hurt by the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
