Two people died in an interstate crash in Milwaukee County Monday morning, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

The multi-vehicle crash closed northbound lanes of Interstate 43 shortly after 2 a.m. and backed up morning commuter traffic for hours.

Officials say two occupants were extracted from their vehicles and administered life-saving measures by the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD).

The vehicle #1 driver was in a gray Jeep Wrangler and pronounced deceased at 2:39 a.m. at the scene.  The vehicle #2 driver was in a red GMC Sonoma pickup truck and pronounced deceased at 2:42 a.m. at the scene. The vehicle #3 driver was in a red Toyota with a passenger -- both were uninjured.

Investigators say preliminary indications suggest the Jeep Wrangler struck the median wall causing it to roll over and partially ejecting the driver. Subsequently, the Jeep Wrangler was struck by the GMC Sonoma and the Toyota.

A full closure of all northbound lanes on I-43 was initiated -- and reopened at 8:12 a.m.
