Alan Randall to be released soon

WAUKESHA CO. (WITI) -- A convicted cop killer will soon be a free man -- after spending nearly four decades in a mental hospital. Alan Randall was 16 years old when he shot and killed two officers outside the Summit Police Station in 1975. The big question today -- where will Randall end up?

Karen Herbert is the widow of Officer Robert Atkins. Atkins was killed in January 1975 along with his co-worker Wayne Olson. Herbert and Atkins had only been married three months when the then-16-year-old Randall pulled the trigger.

"He never shows any emotions for anything - he`s never been anything but in an institution, it`s difficult to say how he`ll do on the outside," said Herbert.

In 1977, Randall was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a mental health facility. His attorney tells FOX6 News, Randall suffered from Schizoid Personality Disorder at the time. But since 1989, Randall hasn't exhibited symptoms.

In April, Randall was granted a conditional release. Then on Thursday, August 15th, a Waukesha County Judge postponed making a decision on where Randall will be placed during his transition.

Randall has most recently been committed in the Fox Valley area. He even earned a work release and is employed at an art gallery. But now there's talk about releasing him in Waukesha.

Randall and his attorney have petitioned for release several times throughout the last decade. His lawyer, Craig Powell, declined to comment on camera. A judge will once again take up this issue on September 19th.
