Community forum held for FPC appointee Ann Wilson
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The call for transparency is being answered. A public forum was held on Saturday, February 23rd to give the community a chance to talk with Ann Wilson, the latest appointee to the Fire and Police Commission. The meeting came at an important time, since the department has never been under so much scrutiny.
As the inquest into Derek Williams’ death wrapped up, the jury recommended charges for 3 police officers -- for failing to render aid while he struggled to breathe in the back of a squad car. The special prosecutor may, or may not follow that advice. But the proceedings seemed to be a step toward justice for Williams’ family and the community.
“We want to file complaints and those kind of things but nobody really believes it matters because nothing ever happens,” said Asst. Pastor Greg Lewis with Pastors United. He said the community needs to mend the relationship with the police department and feel comfortable that complaints are being heard. The group held a forum to get to know Ann Wilson, who was recently appointed a seat on the Fire and Police Commission by Mayor Tom Barrett.
Barrett added, “There’s a lot of important issues the FPC deals with, the firing decisions, the hiring decisions, discipline decisions, a lot of those decisions. It’s one that is important to have someone who has a keen understanding of the community and has maturity and objectivity and that why I appointed Ann to FPC.”
Wilson was appointed with slight controversy. This is the second time her nomination will go before the Common Council. Her initial nomination was rejected after members of the council raised some concern. However Barrett re-nominated Wilson, stands behind her character and says she is fair.
Wilson said, “I hope people will support me.” She welcomed the chance to have honest open dialogue with the community, and hopes it help restore the community’s faith. Wilson added, “I just hope to bring ways of communicating with each other as a liaison between the two and I really enjoy having an opportunity to meet and talk with people.”
Wilson’s appointment will go before the Common Council for confirmation Wednesday, February 27th. There is still another seat open on the FPC. Barrett said he is considering representatives from the Hispanic community.
