MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee community is coming together to help six children whose mother was murdered. Members of the community are working together to bring some Christmas joy to the children of Sharon Staples.

In 2011, Staples was killed by teens trying to rob her. Their 84-year-old grandfather was left to care for them, but he recently passed away.

Then, Vanessa Colbert stepped in to serve as the childrens' foster mother.

Tracey Dent and his organization Peace for Change along with Wellspring of Milwaukee are trying to help the Staples children during this holiday season.

"They're coping to the best of their ability right now. It's a bitter pill to swallow. The older one was with his mother when she passed, and now this happened. A few of them really never got over their mother, so it's kind of rough," Colbert said.

Colbert says it has been a struggle both emotionally and financially.

"They know I can't afford anything right now, because the grandfather passed away and we have to bury him," Colbert said.

Colbert said she is thankful for any assistance she can get, and is overwhelmed by the the thoughtful people looking to help.

Dent orchestrated a toy drive so the Staples children can have something under the tree this Christmas.

"I want the children to understand that not all people are bad. People do care," Dent said.

Even businesses like Paje Restaurant and Lounge are trying to lift spirits.

"We wanted to step in and take the load off so they don't have to worry about Christmas dinner, so we wanted to give them Christmas dinner in a soulful environment -- which is good people bringing services and showing them some love,"

Colbert says the outpouring of community support is not only giving the children hope, but says it is helping her as well.

"It's a struggle, but we're gonna make it," Colbert said.

Those who would like to make a toy or monetary donation to the Staples children can drop it off at Wellspring of Milwaukee, located at 9350 West Fond du Lac Avenue.
