Father-daughter dance in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE -- North Division High School became one of the most popular dance halls in Milwaukee on Saturday night as hundreds of people came together for a very special occasion.
The ninth annual Daddy-Daughter Dance had a record amount of people grace the dance floor this year according to the event’s organizer Cedric Banks. “It’s neat. The ironic part of it is although we’re having it here at North Division, we have people that come to North Division for this event from every zip code in Milwaukee,” Banks said.
“It’s almost like being in heaven. It’s a joy,” Derrick Wright said. “It’s a fulfillment which makes her happy, which fills my heart.”
Wright and his eight-year-old daughter Madison were the first couple to arrive on Saturday night. For them, the event is special because Wright couldn’t make it just two years ago. “I have a heart condition. The year before I couldn’t go because I was in the hospital, and I said the next year I’m healthy enough, I’m going to go," Wright said.
“It was like amazement. I’d never been to this place. It was actually kind of fun,” Madison said smiling. “It’s kind of a joyful, happy feeling.”
The dance, hosted by the Milwaukee Recreation Department in partnership with the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative and the Social Development Commission, is part of an effort to increase positive communications of fathers with young women and girls.
