Border Patrol agents involved in southern Arizona shooting: PCSD

Officials with the Pima County Sheriff's Department say they are helping with a use-of-force investigation that involves federal law enforcement, as a result of a shooting that happened on Jan. 27.

What we know:

The incident, according to the Associated Press, began at around 7:00 a.m. near the community of Arivaca.

Per PCSD's statement, Border patrol agents tried to stop a car that was believed to be involved in human smuggling, but the car failed to yield, which kicked off a pursuit.

"The driver later fled the vehicle, and agents initiated a foot pursuit," read a portion of PCSD's statement. "During the encounter, the subject fired at Border Patrol agents. Agents returned fire, striking the subject."

Dig deeper:

The subject, as mentioned by PCSD, has been identified as 34-year-old Patrick Gary Schlegel of Sahuarita, a community located to the south of Tucson.

"Mr. Schlegel was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in serious condition," PCSD wrote. "The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed Mr. Schlegel was wanted in connection with a human smuggling investigation."

PCSD says they were notified shortly after the incident, while also stating it is standard protocol for the agency to investigate use-of-force incidents that happened within Pima County.
