Bitter cold weather; what your vehicle may need from you

As southeast Wisconsin braces for what could be the coldest temperatures of the season, many of us know this kind of weather does not always mix well with our vehicles.

Mechanics on cars in the bitter cold

What we know:

Mechanics say there are a few things car owners can look out for if you are trying to drive in the bitter cold.

Jon Jagmin is the service manager at Good Hope Service. He told FOX6 News when the temperatures dip this low, there are certain boxes drivers need to check.

What they're saying:

"Things just aren’t designed to work in this extreme temperatures," Jagmin said. "Let’s have our cars, at least five minutes, have it run for a while before you start driving."

Jagmin said there are also visual inspections you should do under the hood – like checking antifreeze levels.

"You’re going to make sure that you can see your fluid, if it’s empty that’s not a good thing," Jagmin said.

As for your vehicle's battery…

"When you see this corrosion, again, if you’re starting to experience that slow crank, let’s put two and two together and replace that," Jagmin said, who recommended getting a battery checked every four to five years.

The bitter cold can also impact your vehicle's tire pressure. If your dashboard light does not have an indicator, look underneath the tire for a bulge – letting you know to get some air.

"Just do all of the precautions, do common sense," Jagmin said.

What Else You Can Do:

Before you hit the road in bitter cold temperatures, consider having a blanket and extra clothing to keep yourself warm – in case of a breakdown. A fully-charged cellphone and a full tank of gas are also recommended.

Some drivers go so far as to have a phone charger, a flashlight or even snacks in their vehicle.
