Bela, German Shepherd rescued by Utah sanctuary after stipulation in owner's will has passed away

UTAH (WITI/AP) -- Connie Ley of Indiana died in November -- and she stipulated in her will that her dog, a German Shepherd named Bela either go to a Utah sanctuary, or be euthanized, cremated, and their ashes be mixed together.

Ley wished this because she believed the 105-pound dog was aggressive -- and not safe around strangers.

Bela was rescued by the Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. Workers there said he still had behavioral issues -- but he was said to be doing better.

Now, we've learned Bela has passed away.

The Best Friends Animal Society said Tuesday, January 27th in a statement posted to its blog that it euthanized the dog after tests revealed fast-growing cancer in his lungs.

The Best Friends Animal Society says Bela will be cremated, and his ashes will be sent to Indiana. He'll be buried with his late owner, Connie Ley.

The following is the statement posted to the Best Friends Animal Society's blog:
