MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's an effort to fight crime and save money. The city of Milwaukee is offering a special deal on vacant lots. You could own one for just $1 -- granted you are an adjacent homeowner living in Milwaukee's 15th Aldermanic District, and are in good standing with the city.
It's part of a pilot program available only in Milwaukee's 15th Aldermanic District.
The area on the city's north side has 15 percent of all of the city's vacant lots.
It is expensive for the city to maintain them, costing up to $400,000 for just the 15th District.
Alderman Russell Stamper II says selling the lots is a win-win for the city and the neighborhoods.
"By selling them-- we're putting them back on the tax roll, generating money, and at the same time rebuilding neighborhoods," Stamper said.
To be eligible for the program, you must be in good standing with the city of Milwaukee. You must also be an adjacent homeowner, living in the city's 15th Aldermanic District.
Stamper says once you fill out an application -- you should have your dollar ready!
If the program works well in Stamper's district, it could potentially expand city-wide.
