Actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were both found dead inside their home in Los Angeles' Brentwood neighborhood.

What we know:

The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call near the intersection of South Chadbourne Avenue and Hanover Street a little after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 14.

Upon arrival, two people were found dead at the location. While officials have not formally identified the two people found dead, reports from TMZ, Variety, ExtraTV, and PEOPLE indicated that the actor who played "Meathead" in the 1970s sitcom All in the Family and his wife Michele were the ones who died at the house.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement later in the evening, confirming the couple's death.

"This is a devastating loss for our city and our country. Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice," Bass wrote, in part.

What we don't know:

It is unknown how they died. According to TMZ, Rob and Michele Reiner may have been stabbed.

As of 8:45 p.m., Sunday, no arrests had been announced in connection to the deaths.

What they're saying:

The family of the late Norman Lear, the TV producer who put together All in the Family, issued a group statement in response to Rob and Michele Singer Reiner's deaths:

"The Lear Family is devastated by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner. Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world.

Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place, and they pursued that through their art, their activism, their philanthropy, and their love for family and friends."

California Governor Gavin Newsom and the state's First Partner Jen Siebel Newsom issued a joint statement in response to the Brentwood couple's death:

"Jen and I are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

Rob was the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love, with projects as wide-ranging as ‘The Princess Bride’ to ‘A Few Good Men.’ His boundless empathy made his stories timeless, teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others – and encouraging us to dream bigger.

That empathy extended well beyond his films. Rob was a passionate advocate for children and for civil rights — from taking on Big Tobacco to fighting for marriage equality to serving as a powerful voice in early education. He made California a better place through his good works.

Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity."

Below is the full statement released by Bass:

"This is a devastating loss for our city and our country. Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice. An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others.

Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele. I knew Rob and have tremendous respect for him. Among his numerous contributions, Rob helped create First 5 California, a landmark initiative funded by a tobacco tax to support early childhood development programs. He and Michele fought for early childhood development and marriage equality, working to overturn Proposition 8. They were true champions for LGBTQ+ rights.

I want to thank all of the first responders who were called to this tragic event. The investigation is ongoing. I'm holding all who loved Rob and Michele in my heart."

The backstory:

As briefly mentioned in the Newsom family statement, Rob Reiner became a household name for his role in All in the Family. He also appeared in New Girl and Morton & Hayes, and through the production and filmmaking side of things, he helped put together The Bucket List, A Few Good Men, The Story of Us and When Harry Met Sally.
