U.S. transportation secretary officially announces $14.2M for Milwaukee streetcar line

MILWAUKEE -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx on Thursday, October 29th announced that the Department of Transportation will provide $14.2 million to support the extension of the streetcar line in downtown Milwaukee.The project is one of 39 federally-funded transportation projects in 34 states selected to receive a total of $500 million under the Department’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) 2015 program.U.S. Transportation Under Secretary Peter Rogoff traveled to Milwaukee for the local announcement.The department received 627 eligible applications from 50 states and several U.S. territories, including tribal governments, requesting 20 times the $500 million available for the program, or $10.1 billion for needed transportation projects.

State Transportation Department opposes bill that would roadblock roundabouts

MADISON — The state Department of Transportation opposes a Republican bill that would put up a roadblock to building roundabouts on Wisconsin highways.The measure heard Wednesday by the Assembly's Transportation Committee would require local communities to approve installation of traffic circles that have increased in use in Wisconsin in recent years.DOT official Tom Rhatican says requiring a local vote could lead to delays and added project costs.

Mayor Barrett: U.S. DOT awards $14.2M grant for Milwaukee streetcar's lakefront line

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Senator Tammy Baldwin and Congresswoman Gwen Moore announced Monday, October 26th that the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the city of Milwaukee a $14.2 million grant to enable construction of the Milwaukee streetcar’s lakefront line.The lakefront line, approved along with the Milwaukee streetcar’s Phase 1 route by the Common Council and Mayor Barrett in February, will connect Cathedral Square to the lakefront using Milwaukee and Broadway and Michigan and Clybourn.It will link to the planned $122 million, 44-story lakefront Couture development, which will incorporate a streetcar stop.In addition to this extension to the Phase 1 route, the mayor intends on additional system expansions into the neighborhoods as part of a modern streetcar network improving transit across the city.“This critical federal grant for the Milwaukee streetcar will bring thousands of residents and visitors to major attractions and new developments on Milwaukee’s lakefront.

Cleared: Utility emergency closes WIS 60 in Grafton

OZAUKEE COUNTY -- Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials have cleared WIS 60 between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue in the Village of Grafton after it was closed Monday afternoon, October 19th due to a utility emergency.A detour was set up after the utility line came down around 4:30 p.m. -- but all lanes were reopened by around 6:00 p.m. when the scene was cleared.

Five highway projects facing delays, Gov. Walker asks that $350M be set aside for transportation

MADISON — Governor Scott Walker says he wants to work with Republican senators to find a solution to funding for road projects in Wisconsin that has led to a delay in some work.Walker spoke to Republican state senators in the Capitol on Tuesday, October 6th.He also voiced his support for replacing the nonpartisan Government Accountability Board with a bipartisan panel, banning the sale of aborted fetal tissue and overhauling the state's 110-year-old civil service system.Walker says he hopes at least "some portion" of $350 million set aside in the state budget for transportation projects can be tapped to continue road projects.This, after a report by researchers at UW-Whitewater for the Transportation Development Association that suggests delaying several major highway projects in Wisconsin could end up costing taxpayers an extra $160 million, while delaying other economic benefits to residents and businesses that would benefit from the improved roads.Walker's Department of  Transportation last week announced it was delaying work on five major projects for two years.Walker told senators at the Capitol Tuesday he's willing to work with them on alternatives.The budget passed this summer authorized $500 million in borrowing, with lawmakers reversing the option to authorize up to $350 million more over the next year.Here is a list of the five major highway projects facing two-year delays, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation:
