Washington County fatal crash; 83-year-old man dead, 2 hurt

A two-vehicle crash in Washington County on Sunday, Aug. 23, left one person dead.

Fatal crash

What we know:

The Washington County Sheriff's Office received several 911 calls around 10:10 a.m. about a two-vehicle crash at Hillside and Pioneer roads in Richfield.

Initial 911 calls indicated one driver was unconscious. Moments later, a passing nurse reported that a male driver was pulseless and receiving CPR.

Washington County sheriff's deputies and the Richfield Fire Department responded to the scene. An initial request for Flight for Life was later canceled.

Arriving deputies found both vehicles off the road, with the northbound driver trapped and not breathing.

Both drivers and a northbound passenger were taken to local hospitals. The northbound driver, an 83-year-old Town of Polk resident, later died from his injuries.

Preliminary investigation

What we know:

Investigators determined the 83-year-old Town of Polk driver stopped on Hillside Road before pulling into the path of an eastbound vehicle on Pioneer Road, driven by a 72-year-old Sussex resident.

The crash remains under investigation by the Washington County Reconstruction Unit and the Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office.
