MILWAUKEE -- Memorial Day is just a few days away and thousands are expected to pay their respects at Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee. On Thursday, May 26th volunteers gave the cemetery a little extra attention ahead of the ceremony on Monday, May 30th.
Hundreds of volunteers spent Thursday morning planting 'Old Glory' 34,000 times -- sacrificing their time for the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"I hope people stick around long enough to get it all done," said Rick Baehering, USMC veteran.
"Just because they are passed doesn't mean they are forgotten," said Baehering.
Baehering served his country.
"Even though I was in at the end of Vietnam, there was still three guys who went in and went home in body bags," said Baehering.
So Baehering does this for them, and others.
"These people served their time, did their job. They're the grassroots of what makes this country free," said Baehering.
Baehering and his buddy are now members of the Honor Guard, so the work Thursday came naturally.
"This is at least our fourth year of doing this," said Baehering.
The Wood National Cemetery will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 30th.
Volunteers will be needed to help remove the flags on Tuesday.
