VIDEO: On a mission to cross Lake Michigan, kayaker rescued by U.S. Coast Guard

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes unit rescued a 31-year-old kayaker from Lake Michigan on Monday, September 1st after he activated his personal locator beacon. The man was attempting to kayak from Milwaukee to Muskegon.

A crew from Air Facility Muskegon, Michigan was dispatched and flew a helicopter to locate the kayaker -- who was apparently about 30 miles off west of Muskegon. Around 8:30 a.m., approximately one hour after being contacted, the crew from Air Facility Muskegon arrived overhead of the man's last known position -- and located him waiving his hands for help.

A rescue swimmer was lowered into the water to assess the kayaker's condition. Both were then hoisted aboard the helicopter. The man was apparently experiencing sea sickness, fatigue and reported being very cold.

Ironically, Monday's rescue was the last of the season for Air Facility Muskegon and Air Facility Waukegan, Illinois -- both are now officially closed for the season.
