NEW YORK — A Facebook hoax telling users their posts will become public is once again circulating online.
According to the post, Facebook users must share this message to keep the website from sharing their public information.
The widely shared post states:
This isn't the first time this hoax has gone viral on Facebook.
The hoaxes can be tracked back to November 2012. Facebook users shared the statuses so widely, the company had to issue a statement to quell the fire.
"There is a rumor circulating that Facebook is making a change related to ownership of users' information or the content they post to the site. This is false. Anyone who uses Facebook owns and controls the content and information they post, as stated in our terms. They control how that content and information is shared. That is our policy, and it always has been," the company said at the time.
The rumors began circulating again in 2015, telling users to write their names saying they do not give Facebook permission to use their content. Facebook addressed the rumors once again, but this time with humor.
One user commented on Facebook's post addressing the rumor that the social media maven would begin charging users.
"Facebook is free and always will be," Facebook replied.
While it won't hurt users to share the post, it won't protect their content.
Facebook asks that anyone who sees the post report it as spam.
