Student body president says she was shamed, suspended over this skirt

BEAUFORT, S.C. -- A high school student body president was sent home for a skirt one staff member said was "too short."

Beaufort High School student Carey Burgess, 17, says she was shamed and brought to tears over the ordeal.

Burgess wrote in her posts on Instagram and Facebook that 20 minutes into a recent school day, she was walking to her classroom with a friend when she heard a staff member behind her say, "Your skirt is too short. You need to go to in-school suspension and then go home."

In her post, she said:

The high school principal, Corey Murphy, told the Island Packet that he couldn't comment on individual student discipline. However, he admitted that Burgess' outfit was within the dress code.

That dress code states that skirts must be "modest and of sufficient length, no shorter than three inches above the top of the knee when standing."

Burgess' Facebook post has already been shared 6,000 times.
