Milwaukee Fire Department: Two-alarm blaze at apartment building on north side is suspicious

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Fire Department officials say a two-alarm fire at an apartment building near 35th and Kaul on the city's north side is being considered suspicious.

The fire broke out around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 8th. American Red Cross officials say the building impacted is an assisted living facility that serves people with special needs.

It took firefighters about 40 minutes to get the fire under control.

No one was hurt.

All of the tenants who live in the building ran outside after the smoke detectors went off. They won't be allowed back inside.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced residents -- 14 in all.

"We're making sure that everybody's comfortable. The manager has allowed everyone to come next door for the time being. We're providing them with water. And some of them ran out without shoes and socks on so we provided them with shoes and socks and blankets," Bob Wade, American Red Cross volunteer said.

Fire officials say there is extensive damage on the building's second floor.

It is estimated the fire caused about $200,000 in damage.
