Kenosha Co. Sheriff's Deputies operate snowmobile patrols

KENOSHA CO. (WITI) -- The Kenosha County Sheriff's Office has a couple new tools in its arsenal to protect and serve. They are snowmobiles.

On Friday, February 8th, two deputies on donated snowmobiles hit the trails with dozens of other snowmobilers for the first time this season. They're on patrol to make sure other riders are staying safe, that they are not drinking and driving, and have the proper license registration.

"Every trail in Kenosha County is owned by private individuals. And if at any point, the snowmobilers act in a fashion that ruins it for all the snowmobilers, we'll lose those trails," said Kenosha Co. Sheriff David Beth.

Along the way, the deputies will do some trail maintenance -- trim branches or clear brush so riders can be safe.

It costs little to run the snowmobile patrols. Yamaha donates two snowmobiles to the department every year. The Kenosha Snowmobile Alliance picks up the clothing costs. This means the snowmobile patrols have been on the trails in Kenosha County for the last eight years at virtually no cost to taxpayers.

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Office works with the DNR to patrol all the snowmobile trails.
