MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- As the weather warms up, you might be thinking of spring cleaning. On Thursday, April 16th, hundreds of volunteers in Milwaukee got to work on a massive building project at the Penfield Children's Center.
Amidst the shoveling, sawing and drilling, Penfield Children's Center was a whirlwind of activity Thursday. More than 130 Kohl's employees got their hands dirty as part of the Kohl's Associates in Action Program.
"I`m going to mulch, I`m going to cook, I`m going to clean," said Colleen Wegner, Kohl's VP of New Stores, Remodels and Facilities. "We have associates that volunteer their time to give back to the communities that we serve."
The kids at Penfield Children's Center will benefit from the volunteers' time. The center serves many children with disabilities.
From cleaning and a paint job, to renovated bathrooms and offices and even a new sandbox, Penfield Children's Center officials say the work goes a long way in making the kids comfortable and keeping them safe.
"It's very important that we keep our facility up to date and clean for the children. We have many children with allergies and medically fragile children," said Chris Holmes, President and CEO of Penfield Children's Center.
Work going on in the therapy room Thursday was a big part of the project. Folks were busy ripping out the carpet and changing it to hardwood, so that the kids using electric walkers won`t get their wheels stuck as they move.
Most of the volunteers participating Thursday were part of Kohl's Facilities Team. That means they fix up whatever isn't working at stores across the country. But they say this work warms the heart.
"Anytime you can give back to someone who gives to others it feels good," said Wegner.
Kohl's volunteers also worked at the Ronald McDonald house making meals, replacing mattress pads and building a new shed.
