Investigators trying to determine cause of fatal crash in Germantown

Germantown police identify the fatal victim in a crash on Highway 41/45 just south of Holy Hill Rd. He is 46-year-old Jeffrey Vis of Fond du Lac.

The wreck happened shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday and forced emergency crews to shut down the north and southbound lanes of the highway for hours.

Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell says the accident got its start when a driver of a northbound car lost control of the vehicle. It was hit by a northbound semi with a full load of milk.

"That results in the semi losing control, crossing the median into - where seven other vehicles are involved, including another semi," said Hoell. "Some of the EMS people likened it to a bomb going-off, when you look at that debris field ...expanding for maybe a tenth, to two-tenths of a mile, I can see where they would equate it to a bomb going-off."

Five people were taken to Community Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A sixth person, a 32-year-old Fond du Lac man, was taken to Froedtert Hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators are now downloading information from the computers in some of the vehicles involved in the wreck. That could aid the investigation which is expected to last a couple of weeks.

Chief Hoell says when you consider Monday's road conditions, there could have bee more injuries and potentially other deaths.
