Investigation into death of UW-Whitewater student ongoing

WHITEWATER -- The investigation into the death of UW-Whitewater student Benjamin Fuder continued Monday, July 30th -- one day after Fuder's body was found at the bottom of the Whitewater Limestone Quarry. Fuder had been reported missing -- last seen in the downtown Whitewater area early Saturday morning, July 28th.

UW-Whitewater officials say counseling services are available to help students in need.

"At this sad time, students have a need to be together, to take care of one another, and we encourage students to take care of themselves too," UW-Whitewater Dean of Students Mary Beth Mackin said.

Questions remain about how and why Fuder ended up at the quarry.

"Whitewater police did an excellent job when they got the missing person's report. They managed to get flyers into the bars. The people who were with him managed to get a lot of information out as to his description and so on to try to find him," Walworth County Sheriff David Graves said.

Sheriff Graves said someone found Fuder's cell phone and took it to his house.

"We don't have a name or a description or anything of who found the cell phone, and that's a missing part of the puzzle. That person is not in trouble. We are just asking that person to contact us or the Whitewater Police Department so we can find out where the phone was," Sheriff Graves said.

Last year, the body of another UW-Whitewater student was recovered at the quarry, and in that case, as in the Fuder case, foul play was not suspected.
