Assessing flood damage in Boulder, CO
BOULDER, Colo. (WITI) -- Monday, September 23rd is a big day for people living in flood-ravaged areas of Colorado -- especially residents of Boulder. Inspectors are starting their work to decide which buildings are safe and which need to be destroyed.
Instead of children hitting the books, workers are scraping the soil outside of Crestview Elementary. They're rolling out contaminated ground and pushing in fresh air.
The drying out process has kept more than 600 students away from class. But city leaders expect the building to draw more than eyes from workers. Dozens of inspectors will check out properties just like it. They'll also check out homes too.
On Monday, inspectors will focus on structures that were hardest hit by flood waters in an effort to keep neighbors safe. They'll label properties with one of three colors -- red, meaning unsafe; yellow, describing limited use with problems to correct; and green, meaning safe to occupy.
