"I don't think satisfaction will come without justice:" Hamilton supporters react to Manney appeal date
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- No more waiting. The Fire and Police Commission announces the appeal hearing date for the officer who shot and killed Dontre Hamilton. But the Hamilton family says they still aren't satisfied.
The Hamiltons have been waiting for this announcement. In fact, protesting its delay. On Thursday, they say it's only one small victory in a long fight.
At the Washington Park Senior Center, the Fire and Police Commission meeting begins with the sounds of demonstrators.
"We are here because we want to change the system," said Curtis Sails, with Coalition for Justice.
There is anticipation because on this night, Dontre Hamilton supporters hear an announcement that has been months in the making.
The Fire and Police Commission set a March 19th appeal hearing date for Christopher Manney. He's the former Milwaukee police officer who shot and killed Dontre Hamilton in Red Arrow Park last April.
Just as soon as the words are spoken, demonstrators interrupt again marching out of the meeting.
"We're never satisfied. I don't think satisfaction will come without justice," said Nate Hamilton, Dontre Hamilton's brother.
Nate Hamilton says this is not the end of his family's journey.
"It should be a one-day hearing. It should be a one-minute hearing saying he's not suitable to be a police officer in the city of Milwaukee.
The Hamilton's are hopeful the appeal will be denied.
"There should be no more conversation about it. The evidence has presented itself," said Nate Hamilton.
Because for this group, they promise a fight is on-going -- not willing to play nice anymore.
"We want change to happen and we want it to happen now," said Nate Hamilton.
