Greenfield Ave. bridge comes down, I-894 to close overnight

WEST ALLIS (WITI) --  For one more night, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will shut down I-894 so crews can finish tearing down the Greenfield Avenue Bridge.  The project, is the first step in the 6 year, $1.7 billion dollar Zoo interchange project.

"It's a 1.7 billion dollar program, and it's a complete renewal of the entire zoo interchange which is Wisconsin's busiest interchange, the infrastructure is old, it needs to be replaced," says Ryan Luck the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Crews will shut down I-894 beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday, January 26th, and reopen the freeway at 8 A-M Sunday morning.  The DOT says they hope to have the bridge completely rebuilt by mid-summer.

Two days into the project, businesses along Greenfield Avenue say they already notice a difference.

"Definitely there has been a decrease in traffic on Greenfield Avenue," says Jeff Zenoni, employee at Uncle Bob's Music.

Zenoni says he is confident his store will be fine, but worries for neighbors.  He is confident in the end the project is a good thing for his business.

"It should be OK, and it will be better in the long run too," says Zenoni.
