BUSTED: Driving with their baby in the car, couple accused of hiding 26 pounds of uncut heroin in diaper box

CALIFORNIA (WITI) -- California parents have been arrested and are facing criminal charges after a K9 officer discovered 26 pounds of heroin hidding in a box of diapers.

FOX6's sister station FOX40 in California reports the discovery was made following a traffic stop early Wednesday morning, February 25th.

During that traffic stop, an officer was alerted by his K9 "Stryker" to the 26 pounds of heroin hidden in a box of diapers.

Following the traffic stop, police searched the couple's home in Modesto. They found a handgun and other evidence drug sales were occurring out of the home. Police seized more than $1,200 in cash, according to FOX40.

"We have taken a high level drug trafficker off the street with this arrest. This was a significant seizure," Sgt. Kelly Rea said.

Police say the 26 pounds of heroin found in the diaper box was uncut, which means it was in an extremely pure form. Heroin is typically mixed with “cutting agents” or substances to add weight and increase the street value. The more pure form of heroin will sell for $8,000 to 10,000 on the street. Once cut, the street value significantly increases.

The Modesto Narcotics Enforcement Team estimates the street value of the 26 pounds of heroin found at this case to be around $2.3 million.

Alcazar and Soto-Mondragon were booked into jail for transportation of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale, and felony child endangerment. Alcazar was additionally charged with being armed in the commission of a felony.

Child Protective Services took custody of the couple's baby.
