"All hell broke loose:" 31-year-old woman shot in the leg in the midst of domestic incident in Grafton

GRAFTON (WITI) -- Grafton police say a 31-year-old woman was shot in the leg in the midst of a domestic incident that required the SWAT Team be called in late Saturday, February 7th.

It happened just after 11:00 p.m. in the 1100 block of Spring Street in the Village of Grafton.

When police arrived at the scene, it was determined a 31-year-old man was intoxicated, and he was involved in an argument with the 31-year-old woman inside the residence.

Police tried to get the man to exit the home. A SWAT Team was called to the scene. While that team was en route, police say the man began to fire shots inside the home.

Police were able to make entry into the home while the man continued to shoot off rounds inside. The man was taken into custody after his gun ran out of ammunition.

The woman was shot in the leg.

The incident was surprising for neighbors, who describe the area as quiet. Jeff Zuraw has lived in Grafton for nearly 50 years. He says Saturday was another quiet evening -- but then there was yelling, screaming, gunshots and sirens.

"It almost seemed like all hell broke loose. Five squad cars, an ambulance and everything right on the corner, with neighbors that have been there for a year and no indication of any trouble," Zuraw said.

"It's a great neighborhood. It's pretty quiet -- a lot of families, nice communities," Kim Edgar said.

Neighbors, who say they hadn't noticed any trouble involving the couple say they're now wondering if somehow they had missed a cry for help.

"Bewildered by what happened because there was no indication of it -- nothing, and you've asked me before and I've never seen the cops there -- never seen anything that would indicate any kind of domestic violence," Zuraw said.

The man hasn't yet been charged. The identities of those involved haven't yet been released.

Police are recommending a charge of attempted homicide to the Ozaukee County District Attorney's Office, along with several other charges.
