17-year-old in custody after two killed in New Year's Day crash

MILWAUKEE -- Two people were killed in a collision between two vehicles at 27th and St. Paul near Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley early Sunday morning. Police say a 17-year-old was arrested in connection with this crash.

The victims, whose names have not been released, were in a westbound vehicle stopped at the traffic signal. Another vehicle, headed northbound through the intersection at a high rate of speed, struck the median and went airborne. It then crashed into the victims' car. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the striking vehicle took off from the scene, but Milwaukee police say that suspect is now in custody. Police say via Twitter that the suspect is 17 years old, and was arrested for homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.

Neighbors describe the intersection at 27th St. and St. Paul as "dangerous," and say people like to speed through the area. They say they're not surprised by the crash, but say it's an unfortunate tragedy that could have easily been avoided. "It's not surprising, but it's sad that a family had to start their new year off with a tragedy like that," one neighbor said.

Police haven't released the name of the 17-year-old suspect at this time.
