GREEN BAY -- The Green Bay Packers have signed a big-name veteran free agent, 36-year-old Jeff Saturday.The five-time Pro Bowl center had been expected to join his longtime Colts teammate Peyton Manning with the Broncos, but after meeting in Green Bay with coach Mike McCarthy last week, Saturday opted to continue his career with the Packers.Saturday is the same height as recently departed Scott Wells and five pounds lighter, as well as five years older.

NFL suspends Saints' head coach for entire season

(CNN) -- In sweeping discipline that one analyst called "historic," New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton was suspended without pay for the entire 2012 season and former Saints defensive coach Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely in a series of NFL punishments Wednesday for the team's bounty program against opponents.Under the bounties, the team paid bonuses for knocking opposing players out of a game, the NFL said.Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis was suspended without pay for the first eight regular-season games of the 2012 season, the NFL said.

Tim Tebow picked up by New York Jets

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Jets acquired Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, bringing the polarizing quarterback to a team that just recently gave starter Mark Sanchez a three-year contract extension.Denver general manager Brian Xanders said the Broncos will receive fourth- and sixth-round draft picks, while New York gets a seventh-rounder -- all in 2012.The trade first was reported by Fox Sports.Tebow, who became expendable when the Broncos signed Peyton Manning to a five-year deal, is expected to complement Sanchez, who received a $40.5 million contract extension, with $20.5 million guaranteed, earlier this month.

Homes moved for new Lambeau Field media parking lot

GREEN BAY -- The Green Bay Packers have begun clearing the way for the new additions to Lambeau Field.Two houses near the stadium were moved, rather than demolished, to make way for a new parking lot for the media.The Packers sold the rental properties to Devooght House Movers for a total of $6,000.

MIAMI (AP) -- Spurned by Peyton Manning, the Miami Dolphins turned Friday to their backup plan -- backup quarterback Matt Flynn.Manning telephoned the Dolphins on Thursday to advise them he would sign elsewhere, and the team began courting free-agent Flynn, two people familiar with the negotiations said.Both people confirmed the developments to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins haven't commented publicly on their free-agent shopping.Flynn, a backup last season with Green Bay, was scheduled to visit Miami by the weekend after concluding a visit with the Seattle Seahawks.Free-agent Mark Anderson, who had 10 sacks last year as a pass-rush specialist for the New England Patriots, visited the Dolphins on Friday.

State Senate okays bill to reduce concussions in youth sports

MADISON (AP) -- The state Senate has approved a bill designed to reduce concussions in youth sports.The National Football League has been lobbying states to adopt laws requiring athletes be immediately removed from their activity if they are suffering from a head injury.The bill would require the state and the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association to educate players, coaches and parents about concussions.

Case closed in death of Michael Philbin

OSHKOSH -- The case is now closed in the death of former Packers' offensive coordinator Joe Philbin's son, Michael.Michael Philbin's body was recovered from the Fox River on January 9th.Oshkosh detectives say they found no foul play.Toxicology reports show that Michael Philbin had a blood alcohol level of .176 and a positive test for marijuana at the time of his death.

Senate approves Aaron Rodgers Day

MADISON (AP) -- The state Senate has passed a resolution naming a day for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.The resolution designates Dec. 12, 2012, as Aaron Rodgers Day.Rodgers, who wears No. 12, led the Packers to a Super Bowl victory last year and helped them to a 15-2 record this past season.
