"You gotta take advantage of it:" Jared Abbrederis living a dream on second day of Packers Training Camp
GREEN BAY (WITI) -- Sunday, July 27th was Day Two of Green Bay Packers' Training Camp -- and it was Day Two of living a dream for Jared Abbrederis -- the home-towner.
Abbrederis grew up in Watoma and played in college at the University of Wisconsin.
"You gotta take advantage of it. Obviously, I'm in the best situation for me possible. I'm excited to be here, but now it's time to work and earn your part on the team," Abbrederis said.
One potential route for game-day action that Abbrederis sees is a return specialist. He certainly showed aptitude in that area as a Wisconsin Badgers player.
"You gotta try and do whatever you can to make the team and have an impact, you know. Obviously, we have a lot of great guys back there. (Micah) Hyde's back there and (Randall) Cobb is -- and a couple others have been back there, so there's guys who have experience and have done a good job, but if I can do something, you know, I'd like to be able to do that as well," Abbrederis said.
When asked specifically if he's big enough and strong enough to be durable in the NFL, a concern some have about him, Abbrederis says "yes." Room for improvement, but "yes."
He'll start to find out for sure on Monday, July 28th -- when pads go on for the first time in Training Camp.
The Packers drafted Jared Abbrederis at No. 176th in the fifth-round of the NFL Draft.
According to Packers.com Abbrederis won the Burlsworth Trophy in 2013 as the nation’s top player who began his career as a walk-on. He finished his career tied for the school record for receptions with 202 and ranked second all-time at Wisconsin in receiving yards (3,140) and touchdown receptions (23).
The NFL.com says of Abbrederis' STRENGTHS: Uses his hands well to swat away press. Stems his routes. Sells his patterns. Nice hands. Good field and boundary awareness. Gives effort to engage and shield cornerbacks as a blocker. Outstanding football intelligence -- like a quarterback on the outside. Productive three-year starter. Mature and humble. Hardworking and coachable. Carved up Ohio State CB Bradley Roby to the tune of 10-207-1.
The NFL.com says of Abbrederis' WEAKNESSES: Has a slender build and needs to bulk up and get stronger. Ordinary pop off the line. Builds to average speed. Could struggle to separate vs. quick-twitch covermen. Lets throws into his body and breaks stride to catch. Not a jumpball player (30 1/2-inch vertical jump). Straightlinish after the catch -- pedestrian agility and elusiveness. Has a history of concussions. Bench-pressed 225 pounds just four times, lowest of all combine participants.
