Torch is passed: Jordy Nelson hosts Packers "Celebrity Softball Game"
GREEN BAY (WITI) -- It's a Green Bay Packers tradition that goes back decades. The "Celebrity Softball Game" was held in the Fox Valley on Sunday, June 8th. This year, the torch was passed from Donald Driver, to Jordy Nelson.
When it's the Packers in Wisconsin, its never hard to get people through the gates -- even when the sport isn't football.
"It's a little bit cheaper and it's fun for the entire family!" Tyrell White said.
For fans, it's a welcome break from the team's long off-season.
The Bauers of Hartford were among the first fans in the stadium.
"Getting to see all the players do something fun and I play softball so I like watching it," Sierra Bauer said.
For the past six years, Donald Driver hosted the event. Fans were happy when another Packers wide receiver has stepped up to the plate.
"I like it. It's cool to see somebody new doing it," Bauer said.
"I think it's good. Donald was an excellent mentor for him. Jordy, I think he's going to do an excellent job," Tim Bauer said.
Number 87 says it was an easy decision when he was asked to lead the event.
"It's an honor. He texted me the other day and I replied. He told me good luck, have fun. I was like thanks, it's an honor to take it over," Nelson said.
Some of the big names like Rodgers and Matthews didn't join Jordy for the game, but the fans didn't seem to mind.
"I mean we showed up here a little before 10 and they're already tailgating and waiting in line to get in the stadium. It's a blast and we really enjoy it and I think the fans do too," Nelson said.
Proceeds from the game benefit Young Life -- Nelson's charity of choice.
It is a faith-based group that helps children -- including some in the Green Bay area.
