Wisconsin Senate votes to delay wolf hunt season

MADISON — The state Senate has approved a bill that would push back the start of Wisconsin's wolf hunt if the federal government allows it to resume.

Under current law, the season starts Oct. 15 and runs through the end of February. Rep. Al Ott's bill pushes the start date back to the first Saturday in November.

He has said the current wolf season conflicts with bird hunters and begins before wolves' winter coats have grown in fully.

Wisconsin has held three wolf hunts, but they have been on hold since the federal government placed Great Lakes wolves back on the endangered species list in 2014.

The bill cleared the Assembly last week and the Senate on Tuesday. It now goes to Gov. Scott Walker for his signature.
