Wis. gets $415K to help homeless vets find housing

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Three housing agencies in Wisconsin have received federal grants of about $415,000 to provide permanent housing for more than 75 homeless veterans.

Housing authorities in the cities of Madison and West Allis will each get about $150,000, and one in Milwaukee will receive about $112,000. The grants are intended to help provide housing assistance and case-management services for veterans.

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan says one out of every six adults in homeless shelters is a veteran. He says that's a "national disgrace.'' He says the grants will help reduce the number of veterans living on the street.

The money is from the U.S. Departments of Veteran Affairs and of Housing and Urban Development. The grants are part of $75 million earmarked to help about 10,500 homeless veterans nationwide find housing.
