WHOA! Watch as driver runs a red light and slams into an MPD patrol wagon, injuring an officer

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police say an officer was taken to the hospital after a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old Milwaukee woman crashed into the patrol wagon he was driving after she ran a red light.

It happened on Thursday, October 30th -- just before 11:30 a.m.

Police say two officers, one driving a squad car seen in the video, and another driving the patrol wagon were headed west on Good Hope Road. They were headed to a call regarding a burglary.

As the squads passed through the intersection at 99th Street, the woman driving a red sedan, headed northbound on 99th Street ran a red light and crashed into the rear driver's side of the patrol wagon.

The second crash heard in the video is a light pole crashing onto the patrol wagon.

Police say two male passengers in the striking vehicle fled the scene on foot following the crash.

A 21-year-old man was apprehended shortly thereafter. When asked why he fled, police say the man told officers "because we hit a police car."

The driver and an 18-year-old female passenger remained at the scene.

The 18-year-old driver was issued citations for driving without a license, operating a vehicle without insurance and disregarding a traffic signal.

The officer who was in the patrol wagon was treated and released.
