We Energies tells customers to brace for higher heating bills

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- With record low temperatures hitting hard this winter, We Energies is warning customers to prepare for a nasty January bill -- 35 to 40% higher than last January.

The company says the higher prices are due to the fact that more natural gas was deliver to retail customer last month than any other month in their history.

It's also the coldest winter yet for Marlene Harow, who moved back to Milwaukee from California.

"It's been very, very chilling -- especially with the temperature being well below, five below, 10 below, 20 below," said Harow.

Like many people her age, Harow relocated to take care of her aging father. She says although the family is being slammed by heating bills, turning down the thermostat just isn't an option.

"I still have to have a blanket on him because of his age," Harlow said. "With our rent  being $900 and everybody being on a budget, I had to go on the budget."

We Energies offers options for those looking for relief from increased heating bills -- including the budget billing option, which spreads out payments over the entire year.

Many customers also qualify for a flexible payment plan or energy assistance programs.
