Wauwatosa Burger King calls in police assistance after customers have financial information stolen
WAUWATOSA -- The Burger King located near 124th and Capitol is under fire after more than 1,000 customers have had their financial information stolen. Friday, December 11th the restaurant owner reached out to the Wauwatosa Police Department to help fix the problem.
The problem appears to have started in early October. Police reports show a computer virus was on the Burger King's machines that may have been sending customer's financial information to crooks overseas.
Restaurant officials brought in an expert to wipe the bug -- but it didn't work.
To date, police say more than 1,000 cards have been compromised, totaling more than $160,000 and counting.
With the consent from the owner of the restaurant, police say they are able to go in and access and scan their computers. They will be working with a computer forensic specialist from the Milwaukee Police Department to try and figure out the problem.
