What happened in the Australian skydiving incident?
Dig deeper:
Seventeen parachutists were on board the airplane, preparing for a "16-way formation jump" from 15,000 feet, according to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).
One parachutist climbed out of the aircraft to jump, when the handle of his reserve parachute snagged on a wing flap, damaging the airplane’s "horizontal stabilizer," the ATSB noted.
Video from the incident features angles of the parachute being released and the man being thrown from the aircraft. The parachute wrapped around the tailplane, while another parachutist fell from the plane in the process.
The man was able to cut himself free with a knife while he was dangling from the airplane. He then released his main parachute, resulting in a safe landing.
