Volunteers deliver Easter care packages to homebound seniors

ST. FRANCIS (WITI) -- While most people have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with family or friends, there are many who spend them alone. One area organization is working to change that -- and bring joy to seniors on Easter Sunday.

"There are so many homebound seniors who can't get around and they just appreciate what we do," said Becky Fischer with Community Projects for Seniors. "Each year we serve roughly 6,000 different seniors, whether it be with a care package, we do in-apartment social events."

More than 200 volunteers helped with the Stock Our Seniors product drive Sunday morning, April 20th. Many say they want elderly folks to know someone is thinking of them, especially at times like Easter.

Giving Hearts donated supplies to create care packages including holiday meals and personal products.

"We have two food lines that are putting out roughly 2,100 meals. We have people package the boxes, wrap the meals, picking up meals in the parking lot, delivering meals to seniors," said volunteer Bruce Wong.

"We do things like toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, dish soap, and we do things on the personal care side like shampoos and conditioners, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, denture care items," explained Fischer.

Volunteers say those on the receiving end are grateful for their efforts.

"They absolutely love it. They can't wait for the holiday to see our volunteers who deliver the meals appear at their door, and they have as big of smiles as we do," said volunteer Tom Hayden.
