Two recent additions: Harbor seal, bonobo born at Milwaukee County Zoo
MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee County Zoo is proud to announce two recent additions: a baby harbor seal and a baby bonobo – both born within the past month.
The male seal pup was born June 13th to mother, Sydney, and father, Ringo, both of whom were born in the wild. The pup is on public exhibit, and zookeepers report it’s doing well and nursing and bonding with mom.

This is the pair’s third pup, and Sydney keeps the pup close to her and follows closely as he explores the pool. She also keeps the other seals from bothering the pup. After a month, the pup will be weaned and taught to eat fish, hand-fed to him by keepers.
In Apes of Africa, the Zoo welcomed a new male bonobo to the troop, born May 23rd. Claudine is the newborn’s mother. This marks her second offspring, and genetic testing will determine the baby’s father.

Bonobos stay attached to their mothers for about six months, and then begin to explore their surroundings and interact with other members of the troop. Currently, other troop members are curious of the new addition and try to catch a glimpse of it. The baby will start to sample food at about six to eight months.
