Two men shot, wounded following dispute at tavern

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating a double shooting that happened near 23rd and State early Sunday morning, March 30th.

Police were dispatched to the neighborhood just before 2 a.m. The victims, a 34-year-old man and a 36-year-old man are being treated at hospitals and are in stable condition.

The shooting occurred as a result of a dispute at a tavern. It has neighbors who live nearby fearing for their safety.

"I was actually laying down watching TV and all of a sudden I heard a bunch of shots. It's kind of scary to think that it could have been more further down and I have this big window right here, so it's kind of scary," Jennifer Mitchem said.

Mitchem says she's concerned for her family's safety and the safety of others on the block.

"It's sad because there`s a lot of people out there that -- just smoking cigarettes and talking or whatever and they could have been innocent bystanders getting shot," Mitchem said.

Officials say the dispute began inside the tavern on W. State Street and then continued out front -- where the gunfire erupted.

"Maybe something needs to be done with the bar. There are a lot of bar fights. I do hear people screaming and fighting all the time. They want to start thinking about the people they have inside. Rethink the people they have there, and think about the other people that live in this neighborhood," Mitchem said.

There are no suspects in custody at this time.
