Suspicious package leaves Waukesha residents uneasy

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- A bomb scare on Friday evening, July 26th has left many in Waukesha with an uneasy feeling.

Waukesha Police and the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad were called to Bryant Street Bridge around 7:30 p.m. as hundreds gathered for "Friday Night Live." They found an unattended box covered in duct tape with tubing protruding from the device.

"We grew up in Waukesha. To see that it was so close to home was kind of freaky," said Sheri Haupenthal.

"That's never happened before as far as I know. This is a very safe city. Wonderful people working really hard on the downtown," said Kathy Hulen.

The Milwaukee County Bomb Squad was able to X-ray the package and at 10:30 p.m. a technician determined it was not suspicious in nature. Police say although the package was not dangerous, it was intended to look that way.

"It's strange how people get their jollies. Why would someone want to do something like that? It's deranged," said Dave Toshner.

No one has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. Waukesha Police tell FOX6 they are in the process of reviewing surveillance footage from the area.
