Suspect arrested after standoff with Waukesha police

WAUKESHA -- The Waukesha Police Department says a 32-year-old man is in custody after being involved in a standoff with police on the city's north side. He surrendered peacefully just before 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3rd.

The standoff began around 9:30 a.m. when a woman on Oak Ridge Court called Waukesha police to report that her neighbor had been shot. The 25-year-old victim ran to the neighbor's house and asked her to call police. The victim suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to her neck.

When police showed up on the scene, they were alerted that the victim's boyfriend may be inside the home and may still be armed. At that point, police secured the scene near Washington and Oak Ridge and people living in a nearby apartment building were evacuated. Those who live nearby were asked to go to their basements.

Officials say the suspect was taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital after surrendering to police just before 2:30 p.m.. He needed treatment for an injury to his hand -- and will also be evaluated for mental health issues.

Police say the man arrested has had a few brushes with the law, but nothing that would indicate a real problem.

Officials say the man apparently wanted to come out of the home, but needed assurances the SWAT Team would not shoot him.
