Shooting victim tried to prevent man from shooting self

RACINE -- Racine police say the victim of a shooting on Saturday was trying to prevent a man from shooting himself.

48-year-old Nick Picazo and a 50-year-old man were inside a home in the 1200 block of Yout St. in Racine just before 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 18th. The 50-year-old man was armed with a rifle and threatened to harm himself. When Picazo intervened, he was shot in the face with the rifle.

The 50-year-old man left the house after the gunshot. Police in Kenosha took him into custody a short time later. He was transported to the Racine Police Department and jailed on an unrelated offense.

Picazo ended up at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa where he is recovering from his wounds.

The Racine County District Attorney's office is expected to issue formal charges in this case in the near future.
