"She's taking it day by day:" Family, community shows support for Sierra Guyton

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- In May, ten-year-old Sierra Guyton was shot in the head while playing at a school playground. She's still in the hospital. But on Saturday, July 12th, some in the community came together to help the family's medical bills.

The fundraiser was a combined car wash and food sales effort.

"We had about a good 20 people just come make donations. They didn't want any food or any washes. They just gave us the money," said Dashia Patton, Sierra's cousin. "So it's been really nice we got a lot of people helping out."

FOX6 News was told the group that gathered for this event was almost entirely made up of Sierra's relatives. One cousin says at family gatherings, Sierra was always entertaining.

"Personally, she's like real funny to be around and you're like always laughing when you're with her and she's like real funny and like crazy but in a good way," said Asia Speser, Sierra's cousin.

Family members say they're just trying to take each day one at a time -- and are holding out hope that somehow, Sierra will recover from her injuries.

"She's still in the hospital. They've taken her off life support, she's still breathing on her own. She's taking it day by day, hoping she pull through, you know, get well so she can come home," said Patton.

If you're interested in helping the family out, you can make a donation by stopping at any US Bank branch. Just tell them you'd like to contribute to the Sierra Guyton fund.
