Security guard sliced after man steals knife from Menards

MOUNT PLEASANT (WITI) -- Mount Pleasant police say a Menards security guard was injured when he confronted a man who stole a knife from the store on Tuesday, May 6th.

It happened at the Menards store on Oakes Road in Mount Pleasant.

Police responded to the store after receiving a report from a loss prevention officer that a white male suspect had stolen a knife from the store -- and had fled in a yellow Jeep driven by a white woman.

Police were able to learn that a security guard confronted the suspect -- identified as 43-year-old Thomas Baumstark of Racine before he got into the Jeep.

The security guard attempted to recover the stolen knife, and sustained a cut to his finger.

Police say the security guard did not require serious medical attention as a result of his injury.

Mount Pleasant police and Racine police located Thomas Baumstark and the female driver -- a 45-year-old woman at a residence in the 3400 block of 6th Avenue in Racine.

Thomas Baumstark was arrested, and has been charged with one count of disorderly conduct, and one count of retail theft (less than $500). Both charges against him are misdemeanors.

Baumstark has a court date set for May 29th.

The female driver in this case was arrested for retail theft (party to a crime) and was released.
