Sam Dekker's dad talks son's accomplishments, "From day one, we had basketballs in the crib"

SHEYBOYGAN (WITI) -- There's a lot of local excitement for this weekend's basketball game, that's in part because some of the Badgers are from southeast Wisconsin, including Sam Dekker, who hails from Sheboygan.

Sam Dekker, or 'Slam Dekker' as he's sometimes called, especially after his game-winning shot against North Carolina. This Saturday, April 4th, his dad says he's out for those Kentucky Wildcats.

Sheboygan Lutheran High School is where it all started, it is where Sam Dekker made a name for himself.

Todd Dekker is Sam's coach and father.

"What an opportunity not too many Dads can do that," said Todd Dekker, Sam Dekker's father and high school coach.

Todd coached Sam four years on this court, but his son's love for basketball started long before.

"From day one, we had basketballs in the crib and from when they could walk he was in they gym," said Todd Dekker.

While in high school, Sam was named Gatorade Player of the Year, All-American and all-State, and given the Mr. Basketball award. He also led Sheboygan Lutheran High School to the school's first ever state title.

"We were down by 9 with less than a minute left and he scored all those points and at 5 seconds left he took that 3 point shot. It was crazy, I mean it was like, people jumping out of the stands," said Todd Dekker.

It was no surprise Sam would keep on dribbling. And he's found great success now playing with the Wisconsin Badgers. His old coach is now just 'dad', and can always be found in the stands.

"I've been known for my coaching whistle so I have a certain whistle and when I walk into arenas, that's the first thing I do -- and the hand goes up a little so he knows we're there," said Todd Dekker.

The Dekker family has seen a lot of attention this year, Todd says he's proud of how Sam handles it.

"Very. Not only as a basketball player but how he's handled this and how he's grown into a fine Christian man," said Todd Dekker.
