Racine County Sheriff’s deputy uses Narcan to revive possible overdose victim
RACINE (WITI) -- A Racine County Sheriff's deputy used Narcan to revived a 30-year-old man found unconscious Sunday, January 18th.
The Racine County Communications Center received a 911 call around 4 p.m. regarding a 30-year-old man found unconsciousness but breathing in the hallway of a hotel in the Town of Yorkville.
When Racine County Sheriff's deputies arrived on scene, they located the patient on the second floor of the hotel. He was still unconscious and had labored breathing. The first deputy on scene asked the 911 caller what happened -- and the caller stated that he just found the patient and didn't know. At that time, the deputy observed injection scars consistent with drug use, and determined that the patient’s condition may have been from a drug overdose.
The deputy then administered one dose of Naloxone Hydrochloride (Narcan) to the patient. Once the Naloxone was given, the patient's breathing became stronger and the patient gained consciousness.
It was found that the patient was at the hotel visiting a friend with the 911 caller, who had previously stated that he didn't know the patient and was just a concerned citizen. During an investigation into the circumstances of the call, the patient and two others, including the original 911 caller were taken into custody on probation violation holds and other misdemeanor and drug charges.
Racine Sheriff’s deputies are trained in the use of Naloxone Hydrochloride (Narcan) which is available for all Racine Sheriff patrol cars.
